Final Stats
Junior midfielder Matt Werakso (Wollongong, Australia) posted his third hat trick in the last seven games to carry the Christian Brothers University Bucs to a 5-2 Gulf South Conference win at Ouachita Baptist Wednesday afternoon.
Werakso put the Bucs (8-4-1, 2-1 GSC) on the board in the eighth minute when he bent a free kick into the net past Ouachita keeper Kale Kammer. The Tigers (4-7, 1-4) drew even in the 27th minute when Ross Ellis found the net.
Freshman Joshua Menard (Lafayette, La./Lafayette HS) put the CBU ahead for good with a 34th-minute goal when he banged home a rebound after Kammer saved a Werakso shot.
Werakso scored just before and just after halftime to complete the hat trick and put the Tigers away. In the 44th minute, he headed in a cross from Ryan Heine (New Orleans, La./Brother Martin HS), and in the 49th minute, he scored his 16th goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Senior Brad Whitsitt (Memphis, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) finished the Bucs' scoring 10 minutes later with an unassisted goal. Ellis provided the game's final score in the 73rd minute when he scored on a rebound after his header had been saved by CBU senior keeper Alex Balog (Leuven, Belgium).
The Bucs will return home Sunday afternoon when they host Harding at Signaigo Field. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
