CLEVELAND, Miss.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute as they defeated host Delta State 1-0 Wednesday afternoon, clinching at least a tie for third place in the Gulf South Conference.
The Bucs (10-4-1, 4-1 GSC) dominated play, out-shooting the Statesmen (5-12-1, 1-5) 19-1 for the match, including a 7-0 edge in shots on goal, but Delta keeper Evan Griffin made six saves. In the 87th minute, a shot by junior Matt Werakso (Wollongong, Australia) came off the post and was deflected into the net off a DSU defender, giving the Bucs their fifth win in a row.
The Bucs are now tied with Montevallo for second place in the GSC at 4-1, behind No. 5 West Florida at 5-0. Montevallo plays UWF Friday night, while the Bucs will face fourth-place Alabama-Huntsville, who is 3-2.
CBU will finish the regular season with two games at Signaigo Field. They will host UAH Friday night at 7:30 p.m., and they will finish the season with a non-conference game against Lambuth Monday night at 7 p.m. in their final tune-up for the GSC Tournament, which will be held Oct. 27-29 in Pensacola, Fla.
