MURRAY, Ky.--A 12-0 run early in the first half helped Murray State build a double-digit lead as they defeated the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 67-52 Saturday night in the first exhibition of the year for both schools.
The Lady Bucs trimmed the Murray lead from 14 points, at 21-7, down to nine at 26-17, but Paige Guffey hit four straight threes to help Murray take a 42-21 lead into the locker room.
The two teams traded baskets for most of the second half before the Lady Bucs went on a 13-2 run late in the game to pull within 14 points.
Sophomore Jessica Plunkett (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led CBU with 13 points, while senior Mary Shea Hackett (Nesbit, Miss./St. Agnes Academy) had 11 points. Junior Ponecia Anderson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) scored seven points and pulled down a team-best eight rebounds.
Joi Scott and Ashley Nicole Hayes had 16 points each to lead Murray State. Paige Guffey had 12 points, while her twin sister Amber Guffey added 10.
The Lady Racers shot 45.1 percent (23-of-51) from the floor, while they held the Lady Bucs to just 38.5 percent (20-of-52). The Lady Racers hit eight of 16 (50 percent) from three-point range, while the Lady Bucs were just three of 14 (21.4 percent).
The Lady Bucs will play their second exhibition game at Southern Illinois Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
