Ridgeland, MS - The Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneer softball team dropped its first two games of the season this weekend when the Lady Bucs fell to Henderson State, 6-1 and to Belhaven, 3-0 in eight innings.

Kallie McFatter started for CBU in the opener and gave up five runs over four innings, striking out three. Henderson State got on the board in the first when a sacrifice fly drove in Tessa Ray to make the score 1-0.

The Lady Reddies scored twice more in the second on a two-run home run from Mo Campbell. HSU scored twice more in the fifth, before another home run from Campbell in the sixth.

CBU got its only run in the bottom of the fifth when Lauren Zavelli doubled home Jenny Bernard.

Tia Shores had two hits while Bernard and Zavelli had a hit apiece. Nikki Dunn pitched in relief and struck out five in three innings, allowing just one earned run.

Dunn starred for the Lady Bucs in the game with Belhave as she and Belhaven pitcher Lyndsey Gavulic entertained the crowd to a masterful pitching duel.

Neither pitcher would allow a run until the game went to extra innings. In the top of the eighth, Lauren Hearn was placed on second via the international tie breaker. Bernard and Paula Cerrito both got on giving the Lady Bucs a bases-loaded, no out situation. However, Gavulic would pitch around it and send the game to the bottom of the eighth.

In Belhaven's half of the eighth, Dunn had two on and two outs. Her own error kept the inning alive, before a home run from JorD'an Orr ended the game.

Dunn finished the game with 13 strikeouts and no earned runs. She allowed just two hits. Bernard, Cerrito and Michelle Paul each had two hits.

Gavulich struck out a career high 19 in eight innings.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action on Saturday, February 18 when they travel to Henderson, TN to take on Freed-Hardeman in a double-header beginning at noon.
