Game One Box | Game Two Box

Russellville, AR - The Christian Brothers University Lady Buccaneer softball team dropped a pair of conference games today, losing 8-7 and 4-1 at Arkansas Tech University.

CBU (7-7, 0-2 GSC) started strong in game one taking a 4-0 lead scoring four runs with two outs in the second inning. Lauren Zavelli started things with a single to center. Sammy Maness drove one up the middle and the bases were loaded after Lauren Hearn drove the third straight pitch up the middle. Hannah Shackelford reached on an infield single, scoring Zavelli and back-to-back hits from Jenny Bernard and Paula Cerrito drove in three more runs for the Lady Bucs.

Tech (9-3, 2-0 GSC) answered back with five runs of its own in the fourth to take a two run lead. The Lady Bucs scored three more in the fifth as Maness drove in two and another scored on an error.

Tech scored once in the sixth and twice more in the seventh. The game came under question when a disputed call resulted in the game being officially protested by CBU coach Donna Crone.

Tech's Molly Schweigart doubled to center field to start the inning. The ball rolled under the fence and Hannah Shackelford put her hands up to signify the ball out of play. Play was stopped with the awarding of a ground rule double, however, when Shackelford reached over the fence to retrieve the ball, and subsequently threw it back into play, the umpire allowed play to resume and Schweigart ended up at third. Two runs scored in the seventh as Tech came from behind to win.

Paula Cerrito and Maness both drove in two in the game. Nikki Dunn started and struck out two.

CBU scored first in game two, putting a run on the board in the first inning. Jenny Bernard walked to lead off the game and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Cerrito. Bernard later scored on an RBI single from Maness.

Kallie McFatter held Tech scoreless over the first three innings, but two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings helped the Golden Sun to the double-header sweep. McFatter went all six, allowing three earned runs and struck out two.

Maness had two hits and an RBI in game two. She was 4-7 with three RBIs and two runs scored in the double-header.

Both teams will be back in action tomorrow, March 7 with a double-header at noon.
