MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers Lady Bucs won three of four matches over the weekend in the Carson-Newman Invitational in Jefferson City, Tenn.
CBU (4-3) started the weekend strong with a 3-2 win over defending West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champion Charleston, winning the final three games to earn the victory. Senior middle blocker Laura Washington (Seattle, Wash./Garfield HS) had 24 kills and hit .568, while sophomore right-side hitter Jenna Cherry (Covington, La./Covington HS) had 21 kills. Senior setter Lauren Amundson (Stanwood, Wash./Stanwood HS) added 56 assists as she tied senior defensive specialist Krista Gyarmati (Phoenix, Ariz./Shadow Mountain HS) for the team high with 16 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Aubrey Pancratz (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) had eight blocks.
Washington added 18 more kills as she helped CBU past Anderson (S.C.) in three games in the second match Friday. The Lady Bucs won game two 43-41, the second-highest single-game score in NCAA Division II history and the eighth-highest in all divisions. Cherry added 12 kills, while Gyarmati had 10. Amundson recorded 50 assists.
Host Carson-Newman knocked off the Lady Bucs 3-1 in the first match Saturday morning, despite 11 kills by Washington and 10 by Cherry. Kelli Sorensen had 15 kills for the hosts.
Gyarmati set a new career high with 24 kills as she helped the Lady Bucs to a 3-2 win over Mount Olive (N.C.) in the final match of the tournament. Cherry and Washington added 16 kills each for the Lady Bucs, while Amundson had a season-high 62 assists. Gyarmati also had a season-best 22 digs to go with five blocks. Washington had 10 blocks.
The Lady Bucs will travel to Walnut Ridge, Ark., tonight to face Williams Baptist at 7 p.m.
