MAGNOLIA, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rallied from a 10-point deficit near halftime to take the lead late, but host Southern Arkansas pulled away in the last two minutes for a 56-48 victory in the Gulf South Conference West Division opener for both schools Saturday night.
The Lady Bucs (7-6, 0-1 GSC West) led 14-12 on a Ponecia Anderson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) lay-up with eight minutes remaining in the first half, but Southern Arkansas (4-8, 1-0) scored the next 12 points to take a 24-14 lead just before halftime.
An 11-1 CBU run midway through the second half gave the Lady Bucs a 33-32 lead on a Kelli Gross (Memphis, Tenn./Houston HS) lay-up with 10:44 remaining in the half, the first of six second-half lead changes. After Gross made a free throw to tie the game at 46 with 2:50 to play, the Lady Muleriders scored the next seven points, including a three-pointer by Brooke Grigsby, SAU's only three-pointer of the night, to pull away for the win.
Anderson and Gross led the Lady Bucs with 11 points each, while Crystal Shelton (Nashville, Tenn./Hume-Fogg HS) scored nine.
Goldie White led the Lady Muleriders with 17 points. Grigsby added 16, while Kim Davis scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
The Lady Bucs held SAU to 29 percent (16-of-55) from the floor, including 7.1 percent (1-of-14) from three-point range, but SAU was 23-28 (82.1 percent) at the charity stripe. CBU shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48), including 25 percent (3-of-12) from three-point range. The Lady Bucs were just 47.4 percent (9-of-19) at the free throw line.
CBU returns home Thursday night to take on Arkansas Tech in their first home game in GSC West play. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m.
