LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Host Bellarmine used a 14-2 run at the end the first half to retake the lead for good as they defeated the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 76-57 Sunday afternoon.
The Lady Bucs (3-1) led for most of the first 18 minutes, building a 14-6 lead on a three-pointer by junior guard Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) at the 15:13 mark of the first half.
The Lady Bucs remained in the lead until a Denasha Mondy layup with 4:52 remaining in the half put Bellarmine (4-2) in front, capping a quick 8-0 run for the Knights.. After a basket by junior forward Crystal Shelton (Nashville, Tenn./Hume Fogg HS) put CBU back in front, the Knights scored the final six points of the half to take the lead for good.
The Lady Bucs struggled offensively in the second half, shooting just 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from the floor with 10 turnovers. The Knights were able to pull away, shooting 45.2 percent (14-of-31) in the second half as they stretched the lead to 19 points twice, including the final margin.
Shelton led the Lady Bucs with 14 points and three blocks, while Butler added 10. Freshman forward Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) pulled down a career-high 10 rebounds to go with her nine points. Freshman guard Katie Hume (Memphis, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) posted a career high with nine points on three three-pointers.
Trisha Bennett led the Knights with 12 points, while Angela Smith, Ashley Lewallen, and Chelsea Gugliotta scored 10 each.
For the game, the Knights shot 38.6 percent (27-of-70), including 40 percent (4-of-10) from three-point range, while the Lady Bucs were 30.9 percent (17-of-55) overall and 26.1 percent (6-of-23) from three-point range. Both teams shot well at the free throw line, with Bellarmine at 75 percent (18-of-24) and CBU at 73.9 percent (17-of-23).
The Knights out-rebounded the Lady Bucs 49-39, including a 21-13 edge on the offensive boards. The Lady Bucs committed 17 turnovers while forcing 10.
CBU will be back in action at Canale Arena Thursday night as they host Mid-Continent (Ky.) at 5 p.m.
