Bucs Split In GSC Opener

March 17, 2007

Final Stats

MONTICELLO, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs split their first Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader of the season Saturday at Arkansas-Monticello, winning 10-0 in the first game and falling 4-2 in the second.

The Bucs (15-10, 1-1 GSC West) wasted no time in the opener with a walk followed by three straight one-out hits. Ryne Dahlke (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) ripped a two-run single to right, and Joseph Kaminski (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) doubled down the left field line to score Dahlke.

After senior lefty Charlie Soukup (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) worked out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the bottom of the first, the Bucs' offense again provided plenty of run support. Two singles set up a two-run single by Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS). Two batters later, Kaminski hit his first college home run, a three-run shot to left.

With an eight-run cushion, Soukup (4-1) settled down and only allowed five baserunners over the final six innings, earning his first career shutout and the Bucs' first of the season. Soukup allowed seven hits and a walk and struck out three in the game, which was ended after seven innings as the Bucs were ahead 10-0.

Kaminski finished 3-for-5 with five RBI. Dahlke was 2-for-3 with three runs and three RBI. Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) went 3-for-3 with a run, and Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) was 2-for-4 with a run.

In game two, a two-run Chris Whatley double in the second keyed a three-run inning for the Weevils (3-21, 1-1). Whatley's successful squeeze bunt in the sixth gave UAM a 4-0 lead. A two-out rally gave the Bucs a chance in the seventh as they scored two runs on two walks and two singles, but Foster was tagged out for the final out of the game.

Griffy continued his strong play in the second game, as he went 2-for-2. No other Buc had more than one hit.

The Bucs and Weevils will meet in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
