MEMPHIS--No. 17 Delta State snapped a four-game losing streak with a doubleheader sweep of the Christian Brothers University Bucs, winning 10-0 and 11-2 in Gulf South Conference West Division action at DSU's Ferriss Field Saturday.
The Statesmen (24-8, 2-3 GSC West) wasted no time taking control of the game as Rickey Noland hit a three-run homer in the first inning. DSU never looked back, rolling to a 10-0 victory over the Bucs (18-13, 2-3).
Delta starter Brett Durand (6-1) retired the first 12 Bucs in order on his way to a two-hit shutout. Only four Bucs reached, and none reached second base.
Another Noland homer in the first inning of the nightcap sparked a three-run first inning. Delta scored three more in the third and fourth innings to put the Bucs away.
CBU finally scored a pair of runs in the sixth as Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) and Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) both singled and scored. Foster went 3-for-3, raising his average to a team-best .434. Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) also went 2-for-3 for the Bucs.
The Bucs and Statesmen will finish their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2.
