Bucs Drop 10-Inning Heartbreaker

March 25, 2007

Final Stats

CLEVELAND, Miss.--After failing to capitalize on a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the top of the 10th inning, the Christian Brothers University fell 2-1 in the bottom of the 10th as No. 17 Delta State's Rickey Noland hit a walk-off homer to complete the Gulf South Conference series sweep.

The Bucs (18-14, 2-4) loaded the bases in the top of the 10th on three Statesman errors, but Joseph Kaminski (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) grounded right back to the pitcher for an inning-ending double play.

Noland led off the Delta (25-8, 3-3) half of the 10th with his third homer of the series, giving DSU the sweep.

The Bucs had drawn first blood in the second inning. Charlie Soukup (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) led off with a double to center and scored on an RBI single by Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS).

DSU tied it with an unearned run in the fifth after Devin Goodwin led off with a single. He moved to second on a J.T. Taylor single and scored on an error.

Freshman Josh Shelton (Millington, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) went 4-for-5 and reached on an error once to lead the Bucs' offense.

Kenny Ellis (Drummonds, Tenn./Munford HS) took the hard-luck loss, falling to 3-3 as he allowed two runs, one earned, on 11 hits and a walk in nine-plus innings.

The Bucs will return to the field Wednesday afternoon as they visit Union. They will be back home Saturday for their first home GSC series of the season against Arkansas Tech.
