Lady Reddies Sweep Lady Bucs

March 29, 2007

Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.--The bats went cold for the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Thursday afternoon as they lost a Gulf South Conference doubleheader at Henderson State 1-0 in nine innings and 18-0.

The Lady Reddies (13-7, 5-5 GSC) won the first game on a one-out Haylee Williams homer in the bottom of the ninth to break a scoreless tie, spoiling a stellar outing by Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS).

Dunn allowed just four hits and three walks in eight and a third innings, striking out 11 before Williams' homer. Meanwhile, the Lady Bucs (10-13, 2-8) couldn't score.

Their best chance was in the fifth after Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) and Meagan Shackleford (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) started the inning with back-to-back singles to break up HSU pitcher Katie Corbell's bid for a perfect game. Corbell buckled down and retired the next three Lady Bucs to end the threat. CBU also threatened in the seventh as Lauren Zavelli (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) and Shackleford each singled. With two out, they moved to second and third on a wild pitch, but Corbell again worked out of the jam and CBU would not put a runner past first again.

Shackleford led the CBU offense, going 2-for-4.

HSU scored nine runs in the first inning of the nightcap on their way to an 18-0 victory as pitcher Patti Collins stymied the Lady Bucs, holding CBU to just two infield singles and a hit batter in the five-inning shutout.

The Lady Bucs and Lady Reddies will meet again Saturday afternoon at Bland Field for the second half of the GSC series. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
