Game 1 vs. UWA | Game 2 vs. UWA | Game 1 at FHU | Game 2 at FHU
MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a doubleheader with West Alabama Saturday afternoon and dropped both games of a Monday night doubleheader at Freed-Hardeman.
In Saturday's first game, West Alabama (13-9) used two home runs to take an early 3-1 lead and put it away with two runs in the fifth and seventh to win 7-3. Hannah Shackelford (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) went 2-for-4 with two runs for CBU (7-3). Meagan Shackleford (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) was 2-for-3, while Lauren Zavelli (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) went 2-for-4.
In the second game Saturday, CBU scored all they would need in the bottom of the first as Paige Wright (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) led off with a double and scored when Shackelford reached on an error. Zavelli drove Shackelford in later in the inning with a single. CBU added a run in the fourth and two in the fifth to give Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) plenty of run support. Dunn tossed her third straight shutout, allowing just three hits and a walk as she struck out a dozen as CBU won 5-0.
Dunn's shutout streak ended at 23 innings Monday night at Freed-Hardeman when she gave up a home run to Brittany Johnson in the fifth inning. Johnson hit another leadoff home run in the seventh inning to tie the game, and the Lady Lions (8-3) won 3-2 in the eighth on a sacrifice fly.
In the second game, Wright hit a leadoff homer to give CBU a 1-0 lead, but a four-run first inning helped the Lady Lions take an 8-1 win.
The Lady Bucs open GSC play Thursday night at Delta State. They return home Saturday to host DSU at 1 p.m.
