CLEVELAND, Miss.--Host Delta State swept a doubleheader from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 9-1 and 8-0 Thursday night at University Field in the Lady Bucs' Gulf South Conference opener.

The Lady Statesmen (15-11, 3-1 GSC) drew first blood in the bottom of the third inning when Brittany Tillery led off with a bunt single and scored on a Chasey Niebrugge double. DSU blew it open an inning later, scoring four runs on three hits and two walks as Niebrugge hit a three-run double to left center. A Lauren Zavelli (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) homer in the sixth was the only scoring for the Lady Bucs (7-5, 0-2), and DSU ended the game with four runs in the sixth.

DSU wasted no time putting the Lady Bucs away in the nightcap, as Nichole Fontenot hit a two-run double in the first inning. They added three more in the second and three in the third to post the final 8-0 margin.

The Lady Bucs and Lady Statesmen will meet again Saturday afternoon at Bland Field at 1 p.m.
