Lady Muleriders Sweep Lady Bucs

MAGNOLIA, Ark.--Southern Arkansas remained in first place in the Gulf South Conference's West Division as they completed a four-game series sweep of the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Muleriders (27-21, 15-8 GSC) capitalized on seven hits and seven walks as they won the first game of the doubleheader 9-2, while Elena Clinton's one-hit shutout carried them to a 12-0 win in the second game.

CBU (14-23, 5-18) scored first in the opener as Lauren Zavelli (Bartlett, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) singled and scored on a passed ball. SAU scored two in the second, but a Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) homer in the top of the third tied the game back up at 2. SAU took the lead for good in the bottom half of the inning as Tisha Thompson doubled Samantha Hoelscher home. SAU scored at least one run in each of their final five innings at the plate.

In the first game, Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) went 3-for-4 to pace the CBU offense. Maness and Hannah Shackelford (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) added two hits each for the Lady Bucs.

In the second game, SAU scored six runs in the first inning on five hits and a walk, capped by a grand slam from Samantha Beason. Meanwhile, Clinton only allowed one Lady Buc to reach, as Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) singled to lead off the third.

The Lady Bucs will finish their non-conference schedule Tuesday afternoon as they host Lambuth for a doubleheader at 2 p.m. CBU will complete their home schedule when they host Ouachita Baptist in a GSC doubleheader Thursday at 2 p.m.
