Final Stats

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs split a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader with Henderson State Saturday, winning the opener 8-6 but falling 7-3 in the second game.

Junior shortstop Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) reached base all five times and scored four runs to carry the Bucs (20-27, 4-12 GSC West) in the opener. He went 3-for-4 with a double, two singles, and a hit by pitch, and he reached on an error.

Freshman second baseman Josh Shelton (Millington, Tenn./CBHS) drove in a career-high six runs as he went 3-for-5. Shelton hit a two-run double in the third, a two-run single in the fourth, and a two-run double in the eighth.

Charlie Soukup (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) and Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) each had two hits for the Bucs in the game.

Soukup also improved to 5-4 on the season as he picked up the win, allowing five runs on eight hits and three walks in six innings. Shawn Morgan (Bartlett, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) earned his first save of the season as he allowed one run in three innings of relief. He struck out five batters and allowed two hits and a walk.

The Reddies rallied for a win in the second game after Foster and Shelton had again given CBU an early lead. Foster singled to start the game, and Shelton's double put runners on second and third. Soukup drove in a run with a groundout, and Joseph Kaminski (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) singled another run home.

HSU centerfielder Mike DeVito blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the second, and HSU never trailed again. HSU tacked on two more in the fourth on two singles, a walk, and an error.

The Reddies put it away in the fifth with three runs on three hits. The Bucs rallied for a run in the top of the seventh as Shelton reached on an error and scored on a Ryne Dahlke (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) groundout.

The Bucs and Reddies will meet Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the rubber game of the three-game GSC West series.
