April 22, 2007

Final Stats

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.--Henderson State turned four double plays and stranded eight Christian Brothers University runners as they defeated the Bucs 9-4 in Gulf South Conference West Division action Sunday afternoon.

The Bucs (20-28, 4-13 GSC West) led 3-2 after five innings when Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) had scored on an error in the top of the fifth.  Foster and Josh Shelton (Millington, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) had scored in the third to tie the gmae.  Foster singled, stole second, and scored on Shelton's single.  Shelton came home when Ryne Dahlke (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) reached on an error.

The Reddies (17-34, 4-14) took the lead for good in the bottom of sixth when they scored three runs.  With runners on first and second with one out, Cory Venable hit a two-run triple, and he scored one batter later on a squeeze bunt.

The Bucs closed the gap to 5-4 when Shelton scored in the top of the seventh.  He drew a leadoff walk and scored on a Joseph Kaminski (Little Rock, Ark./Catholic HS) single, but a double play snuffed out the threat.  CBU grounded into double plays in the final three innings after lining into one in the first.

The Reddies put it away in the bottom of the seventh as they batted around, converting five singles and a walk into four runs.  Venable had a two-run single in the inning, as he finished the game 2-for-4 with four RBI.

Foster and Shelton each went 2-for-4 with two runs for the Bucs in the game.

The Bucs will return to action Tuesday afternoon when they visit Freed-Hardeman at 2 p.m.  They will visit Bethel Wednesday at 3 p.m. before finishing their season back in Arkadelphia with a GSC West series next weekend at No. 2 Ouachita Baptist.
