April 29, 2007

Final Stats

ARKADELPHIA, Ark.--No. 5 Ouachita Baptist clinched their first-ever Gulf South Conference West Division championship as they completed a three-game sweep of the Christian Brothers University Bucs with an 11-1 victory Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Tigers (48-6, 18-3 GSC West) ended Delta State's 12-year reign as the GSC West Champions. Delta State and Southern Arkansas entered Sunday's game tied for second place at 16-4.

Ouachita wasted no time putting the Bucs (21-31, 4-16) away, scoring three runs in the first inning as they batted around. They tacked on two more in the second and another in the third to take a 6-0 lead. Meanwhile, Ouachita pitcher Kody Gibson (10-1) rolled, setting down 16 straight Bucs at one point. He allowed one run on five hits and two walks in seven and a third innings, striking out five batters.

Trailing 9-0, the Bucs scored their only run in the top of the eighth inning. Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) singled to left, and a single by Steven Shelton (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) put runners on second and third. Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) then ripped a single to right field, and an error allowed Trouy to score.

Foster, Trouy, Shelton, Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS), and Josh Shelton (Millington, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) each had one hit for the Bucs.
