Lady Bucs Go 5-1 In Weekend Road Trips

MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs went 5-1 over the weekend in their season-opening series of road trips to Freed-Hardeman, Lambuth, and Lyon.

CBU started Saturday afternoon with a pair of wins at Freed-Hardeman. In the first game, Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) struck out 17 batters and allowed no earned runs in a 3-2, 10-inning win. The game was scoreless through seven innings, sending the game to extra innings and the international tiebreaker. The Lady Bucs drove in the awarded baserunner all three innings, and Dunn threw a perfect 10th to win the game.

In the second game, the Lady Bucs pounded out 15 hits on their way to a 12-7 win. They pushed five runs across in the top of the first as they batted around, and they added two more in the second and one in the third for a commanding 8-0 lead. FHU cut the lead back to 8-3, but CBU plated two more in the sixth and seventh to push the lead back to nine runs. FHU scored four runs with one out in the seventh before Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/Summit HS) finished off her first win of the season by retiring the last two batters.

Sunday, the Lady Bucs went to Lambuth and split a doubleheader. CBU won the first game 4-3 when Lauren Hearn (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) scored on a two-out error to break a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh. Lambuth had taken a 3-0 lead in the first three innings before the Lady Bucs tied it with a three-run fourth.

In the second game, Lambuth earned a 4-2 win over the Lady Bucs. LU scored two runs in the second and another in the third to again take a 3-0 lead. The Lady Bucs scored in the fourth when Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) singled and scored on a two-out McFatter double. The Lady Bucs scored again in the seventh, but the rally ended with the tying run on first base.

The Lady Bucs got back on the right track Monday afternoon with a sweep at Lyon. In the first game, Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) scored all three runs of a 3-2 win. She singled and scored in the first, doubled and scored in the third, and walked and scored on a Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) double in the seventh. Dunn blanked the Pipers (0-4) until the seventh, when they scored a pair of runs before a popout ended the game.

The Lady Bucs went back to extra innings in the second game, winning 8-5 in 10. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first when Nelson and King both singled and scored on a Paige Wright (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) single. Lyon scored a run in the first and second to tie, then took a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning. King doubled in the sixth and came home on another Wright single to tie the game and send it to extra innings. Again both teams converted on the international tiebreaker in the eighth and ninth, but the Lady Bucs scored three runs in the 10th on a King single, a Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) single, and a Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) double. McFatter stranded runners on second and third to seal the victory for CBU in the bottom of the 10th.

King hit .429 with four doubles for the weekend, while Nelson hit .370 with six runs scored. Dunn is 3-0 with a 0.88 ERA and 33 strikeouts against five walks in 24 innings, while McFatter is 2-1 with a 2.74 ERA.

The Lady Bucs will be back in action Sunday as they visit Millsaps at 1 p.m. CBU's doubleheader originally scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 28 at Union has been moved to Bland Field due to travel considerations. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
