MAGNOLIA, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs built a 60-39 lead in the second half and held on for a 64-57 win at Southern Arkansas Thursday night, moving into a tie for fourth place in the Gulf South Conference West Division.
The Lady Bucs (16-5, 4-4 GSC West) never trailed, building a 9-2 lead in the first three minutes and never letting SAU (4-16, 0-8) closer than four points again. The Lady Bucs went on a 24-10 run in the second half to blow a 36-29 lead out to a 60-39 one on a layup by freshman guard Katie Hume (Memphis, Tenn./Evangelical Christian School) with 7:27 remaining. SAU finished the game on a 16-2 run to close within seven points in the final seconds.
Senior center Ponecia Anderson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) and junior forward Crystal Shelton (Nashville, Tenn./Hume Fogg HS) led CBU with 16 points each. Anderson grabbed eight rebounds to go with her season-high 16 points. Freshman forward Sheena DeBose (Tunica, Miss./Rosa Fort HS) added 10 points off the bench.
Goldie White led SAU with 21, while Shanaye Davis and Kayla Jones each scored 12.
The Lady Bucs shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the floor while holding SAU to 35.8 percent (19-of-53), and the Lady Bucs held a commanding 39-29 edge on the boards.
The Lady Bucs will have a week off before returning to Canale Arena Thursday night, Feb. 14, to take on No. 15 Arkansas Tech.
