CBU-Union Game 1 | CBU-Union Game 2 | CBU-Crichton | CBU-West Alabama
MEMPHIS--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs won one of four games this week, dropping a doubleheader to Union and splitting their two games in the Tiger Invitational at West Alabama Saturday.
Thursday afternoon in their home opener, the Lady Bucs (9-5) lost 10-1 and 5-2 in a doubleheader against Union (2-2).
UU scored six runs in the third inning to blow open what had been a scoreless tie in the first game, and they added four more in the fifth to put the game away. The Lady Bucs' only run was in the bottom of the fourth, when Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS) doubled and scored on a Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) single. Maness went 2-for-2 to pace the CBU offense.
Union pulled away late in game two, scoring a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie. Maness and Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) each had RBI singles for the Lady Bucs.
Saturday in Livingston, Ala., offenses ruled the day, as the Lady Bucs won 10-1 over Crichton and lost 13-11 to host West Alabama.
A three-run Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) homer in the second helped the Lady Bucs stretch out a big lead over Crichton (1-7). Mathews singled and scored in the first, and King singled and scored in the third to give CBU a 5-0 lead.
After Crichton scored in the bottom of the inning, the Lady Bucs batted around in the top of the fourth to blow it wide open, exploding for five runs on five hits, two walks, and an error. Mathews went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI, while King went 2-for-3.
In the nightcap, King went 4-for-4 with three doubles and five RBI, but the Lady Bucs were outscored 13-11. UWA scored three runs in the first, two in the third, and they blew it open with six runs on three homers in the fourth. In all, UWA hit five homers in the game.
King hit a three-run double in the top of the fourth inning to put CBU up 6-5 before UWA's big inning helped them retake control. Trailing 13-8 after six innings, the Lady Bucs rallied again with two outs in the seventh inning as Nelson blasted a three-run homer, her second of the season. King followed with a double, but the rally ended on a lineout a batter later. Nelson went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI for the game. Mathews was 2-for-4 with three runs, while Jessica Ambers (Collierville, Tenn./Collierville HS) and Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) each had two hits.
