Game 1 Stats | Game 2 Stats

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs pounded out 33 hits on their way to a doubleheader sweep at Arkansas Tech Saturday afternoon, moving the Bucs within a game of third place in the Gulf South Conference West Division, winning 9-8 and 10-4.

Senior outfielder Bobby Lawrence (Germantown, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) capped off a big first game as he blasted a game-winning homer to left-center with two outs in the top of the ninth inning, giving the Bucs (13-16, 5-3 GSC West) a 9-8 win in a back-and-forth game.

The Bucs had retaken the lead an inning earlier as Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) hit his sixth homer of the year, a two-run shot that put the Bucs ahead 8-7 before ATU (17-13, 6-2) tied it back up with a pair of hits in the bottom of the eighth.

After a leadoff walk, senior hurler Steven Thomas (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) drew three straight groundouts to finish out the victory, making him 1-0 on the year.

Kaminski had a huge game, going 4-for-5 with a homer, a double, two runs, and two RBI. Lawrence was 3-for-4 with a double, a homer, and two RBI. Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS), Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS), and Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) also added two hits each.

In the nightcap, the Bucs wasted little time setting the table. They started the game with four straight hits, sending 10 to the plate in what was a four-run inning.

The Wonder Boys cut the lead to 4-3 with two runs in the second and another in the third. But the Bucs exploded for three runs in the fifth as they began to stretch it out. The Bucs used three hits, a walk, and an error to bring home three in the fifth, and an inning later they used three hits and a walk to score a pair, extending their lead to 9-4.

Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) doubled to center in the seventh and scored on a Shelton single, providing the final margin.

Kaminski and Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) each went 3-for-5 to pace the Bucs' offense, while Foster, Shelton, and Britt added two hits each. Shelton scored three runs again in the second game.

Meanwhile, junior lefty Dave Delugach (Hernando, Miss./Memphis University School) threw his first career complete game, allowing four runs as he scattered nine hits and three walks.

The Bucs and Wonder Boys meet again tomorrow at 1 p.m. as the Bucs will try to complete the sweep and move into a tie for third place in the GSC West Division race. The top four teams in each division qualify for the GSC Tournament, which is held at USA Stadium in Millington in May.
