No. 1 Lady Statesmen Wear Down Lady Bucs 63-41

SOUTHAVEN, Miss.--No. 1 Delta State outscored the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs 37-21 in the second half as they pulled away for a 63-41 win in the quarterfinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament Thursday night at the DeSoto Civic Center.

The Lady Bucs (19-10) pulled within three points when a three-point play by Kat Butler (Nashville, Tenn./Brentwood HS) trimmed the DSU lead to 28-25 with 17:58 to play. DSU (27-0) scored the next 10 points to push the lead to 38-25, and the Lady Bucs never came closer than 11 again.

The Lady Bucs ran out of gas down the stretch, only scoring one field goal in the last nine minutes as DSU pushed their lead to 22 points in the final minute.

Junior forward Michelle Malone (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) led the Lady Bucs with 11 points, while Butler finished with 10. Butler scored the Lady Bucs' first seven points, but she only scored once more, on the three-point play at 17:58.

Brittani Calhoun and Kirsten McBride led DSU with 12 points each, while Lamaesha McAdory added 10 points and nine rebounds. GSC West Division Player of the Year Jennifer Rushing had nine points, six assists, and five steals against two turnovers.

The Lady Bucs shot just 31.7 percent (13-of-41) from the floor for the game, including 22.2 percent (4-of-18) in the second half. DSU finished 49.0 percent (24-of-49) from the floor, and they held a commanding 40-18 edge on the boards.

The Lady Bucs finish their season at 19-10, their second-best record since joining the NCAA and the best under head coach Scott Groninger.
