MAGNOLIA, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs snapped a long losing streak in Gulf South Conference play as they split a doubleheader at Southern Arkansas Wednesday afternoon, winning the first game 9-4 before dropping the second 11-3.
The Lady Bucs (15-25, 2-20 GSC) used a four-run third inning to seize control of the first game. Paige Wright (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a passed ball. She scored on a single by Casey King (Flower Mound, Texas/Flower Mound HS). Kallie McFatter (Mansfield, Texas/ Summit HS) followed that with a single, then Sammy Maness (Gallatin, Tenn./Gallatin HS) cranked her third homer of the season, a three-run shot that gave the Lady Bucs a 5-3 lead.
Two innings later, the Lady Bucs put it out of reach. Maness started the inning with a single, and she scored when Nikki Dunn (Southaven, Miss./Southaven HS) reached on a two-out error. Kathleen Nelson (Bartlett, Tenn./Bolton HS) followed that with a two-run shot to right, giving the Lady Bucs a commanding 8-3 lead on her team-high fifth homer of the year.
Maness finished a strong game in the sixth when she hit an RBI groundout to score King, who had walked to start the inning.
For the game, Maness went 2-for-4 with four RBI, while Nelson and Victoria Mathews (Arlington, Texas/Mansfield Timberview HS) each went 2-for-5.
The Lady Bucs picked up where they left off in game two, scoring three runs before they recorded an out in the top of the first. Nelson singled and scored on a Mathews double. Wright hit her third homer of the year, giving CBU a 3-0 lead and prompting SAU (8-27, 3-20) to go to the bullpen. SAU reliever Cheyenne Savony (5-11) blanked the Lady Bucs on just one hit as she threw five innings of relief.
The Lady Mulerider bats woke up in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three hits, a walk, and a hit batter in the bottom of the first to tie the game.
They took the lead for good an inning later, turning three hits and two errors into three runs. After scoring another run in the fourth, they ended the game with four in the bottom of the fifth, finishing the game on a two-run single by Kirstie Reed.
Nelson went 2-for-3 in game two.
The Lady Bucs and Lady Muleriders will be back in action Saturday at noon as the Lady Bucs celebrate Senior Day. They will honor their three seniors: Wright, Maness, and Lauren Hearn (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS).
