SEARCY, Ark.--The Christian Brothers University Bucs split a Gulf South Conference West Division doubleheader at Harding Sunday afternoon, winning the first game 7-6 but dropping the nightcap 8-0.
The Bucs (14-19, 6-5 GSC West) held on for a win in a wild, back-and-forth game one as Will Britt (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) hit an RBI single to center with two out in the top of the ninth. Steven Thomas (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) pitched his way through a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to protect the win, moving his record to 2-0 on the year.
The Bucs opened the scoring in the top of the first as Mark Foster (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) reached on an error. He moved to third base on another error and scored on a groundout.
The Bisons (19-16, 4-6) drew even in the bottom of the inning when Aaron Roberts walked and eventually scored on a passed ball.
The Bucs broke the tie in the fifth inning as Matt Trouy (Millington, Tenn./Millington HS) singled and came around to score when Foster reached on another error.
An inning later, they seemed to blow it wide open, stretching the lead to 6-1 as they converted two hits, two errors, and a walk into four runs. Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) got the inning started as he drew a one-out walk. After Britt reached on an error, Rocky Escajadillo (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) laid down a bunt single to score Kaminski. Alvino Ramirez (Las Vegas, Nev./Centennial HS) hit an RBI double to left-center to bring Britt home. Trouy hit a sacrifice fly to bring Escajadillo home, and Ramirez scored on another error.
But Harding responded with a four-spot of their own in the bottom of the inning, turning four hits a walk, and an error into four runs. The Bisons tied it up in the bottom of the eighth as Bo Whitaker singled with two out and scored on a Ryan Moody double.
The Bucs answered with Britt's game-winner in the top of the ninth. Andrew Griffy (Arlington, Tenn./Bolton HS) walked and advanced to second when Shelton reached on an error. Britt's single brought him home, giving the Bucs the win.
Kaminski, Ramirez, and Troy had two hits each to pace the Bucs.
In game two, Harding pitcher Brodie Brumley tossed a two-hit, no-walk masterpiece, lifting the Bisons to an 8-0 win.
The Bucs could only put three runners on base in the game. Griffy singled in the fourth inning, and the Bucs put two runners on in the fifth. Kaminski reached on an error but was erased in a double play a batter later, and Britt singled with two outs.
The Bucs will be back in action Tuesday afternoon at 3 p.m. as they host Mid-Continent (Ky.).
