MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs finished second in the annual season-opening CBU Tournament, winning 3-0 over West Liberty Saturday morning before losing the championship match 3-0 against Montevallo.
In the first match, the Lady Bucs (3-1) rolled to a quick 25-11, 25-14, 25-21 win over West Liberty State (0-4). Junior
Hanna Orendorff (Renton, Wash./Liberty HS) pounded 10 kills in two sets, hitting .833 to lead the Lady Bucs. As a team, CBU hit .363.
Freshman
Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) had eight kills and a match-high 14 digs, while fellow freshman
Whitney Weyhrich (Lincoln, Neb./North Star HS) had 23 assists in two sets before Kelsey Green (Memphis, Tenn./St. Agnes Academy) added 12 assists in the third set.
In the championship match, Montevallo (3-1) avenged the Lady Bucs’ come-from-behind win last night, winning 25-18, 25-18, 26-24. Katy Handrick led three players in double-figures in kills for the Falcons with 13, while Lauren Tortorici added 12 kills and 16 digs.
Weyhrich led the Lady Bucs with nine kills and 26 assists, while Nolan set a season high with 22 digs.
The Lady Bucs will be back in action Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they take on Lyon College.
