HUNTSVILLE, Ala.—West Georgia held off a furious Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs rally to take a five-set win in the final match for both schools in the UAH Volleyball Invitational.
After the two teams traded wins in the first four sets, the Wolves (4-2) jumped out to a 10-4 lead in the fifth set. The Lady Bucs (5-3) stormed back to tie it at 13, but a kill by Andressa Martins and an ace by Amber Barnlund ended the Lady Bucs’ comeback, giving UWG a 19-25, 25-17, 29-31, 25-21, 15-13 win.
Martins finished with a match-best 26 kills for UWG, while Thomasinnia Berry added 16.
The Lady Bucs continued their strong offensive play in the loss, hitting .283 as a team, led by 14 kills and a .591 hitting percentage by senior middle blocker
Aubrey Pancratz (Chandler, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS). Freshman outside hitter
Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) had 12 kills, while senior outside hitter
Jenna Cherry (Covington, La./Covington HS) added 10. Freshman setter
Whitney Weyhrich (Lincoln, Neb./North Star HS) collected a career-high 45 assists.
The Lady Bucs will play their first of four matches against Division I opposition Monday night as they visit Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 6 p.m. They will be on the road until Tuesday, Sept. 16, when they host Rhodes at 7 p.m.
