MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs started their 2009 season with a pair of wins in the Christian Brothers University Tournament Friday at Canale Arena, winning over Illinois-Springfield in four sets and sweeping Alderson-Broaddus (W.Va.) in three sets.
In the Friday morning opener against UIS, the Lady Bucs dropped the first set 25-21, but they rallied to sweep the final three sets 25-14, 25-19, and 25-14.
Hanna Orendorff (Renton, Wash./Liberty HS) led the way with 15 kills, while
Logan Westphal (Herndon, Va./Herndon HS) celebrated her return from missing last season due to injury with 13 kills and a .632 hitting percentage.
Michelle Hein (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) also added 10 kills. Freshman libero
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) collected 17 digs in her debut, while
Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) had 14.
Whitney Weyhrich (Lincoln, Neb./North Star HS) dished out 47 assists in the victory, helping the Lady Bucs hit .295 as a team.
The Lady Bucs kept the winning streak alive with a three-set sweep of Alderson-Broaddus, claiming a 25-22, 25-11, 25-19 win.
Orendorff hit .435 with 12 kills in the match, while CBU shined defensively with 68 digs, led by 17 from Hein. Doder added 16, while Weyhrich and Nolan added 11 and 10, respectively. Weyhrich collected 39 assists in the match.
The Lady Bucs will return to the court Saturday at 10 a.m. as they host Northwest Missouri State. They finish their opening weekend with a 6 p.m. battle against Missouri-St. Louis.
