Box Score 2 FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost a pair of matches Saturday in the Hyatt Place Shark Classic hosted by Nova Southeastern University, losing in three sets to No. 5 Minnesota-Duluth and dropping a five-set heartbreaker to Barry.
In the morning match, the No. 5 Bulldogs (7-0) hit .320 as a team as they rolled to a 25-17, 25-19, 25-16 win. In the first set, the Lady Bucs (4-5) built leads of 8-3 and 13-7 before the Bulldogs scored 10 straight to take the lead and control of the match. The Lady Bucs kept it close in the second set, staying within two points as late as 20-18 before UMD scored five of the last six points for the win. In the third set, the Bulldogs built an 8-3 lead quickly and never let the Lady Bucs closer than four points again.
Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) led the Lady Bucs' offense with eight kills, while
Kaitlin Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) added seven kills as she hit .312.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 28 assists, and
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) gathered a match-high 10 digs.
In the final match, Barry (3-1) edged the Lady Bucs in five nailbiting sets, all of which were decided by two points. In the first set, the Lady Bucs scored the final three points to win 30-28. They followed the exact same script in the second set, scoring the final three points to win 30-28 again to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, the Lady Bucs led 22-20 before Barry scored five of the last six points to win 25-23. Barry sent it to the fourth set by scoring eight of the last 12 points after CBU led 22-19, claiming a 27-25 win to send the match to a decisive fifth set. In the fifth set, the Lady Bucs rallied from an early 8-3 hole to take a 14-13 lead with a chance to win the match, but Barry scored four of the last five to win 17-15 in a two-hour, 35-minute marathon.
For the match as a whole, there were 43 ties and 24 lead changes, as all five sets saw at least five ties and three lead changes.
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the way for the Lady Bucs with 18 kills to go with 21 digs, while
Michelle Hein (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) had 17 kills and 17 digs. Keathley added 12 kills. Miles set a career-highs with 54 assists and 17 digs.
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) set a season high with 30 digs, the sixth-highest total in school history, while
Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) added 11. The Lady Bucs' total of 104 digs was the eighth-most in school history and the most since collecting 104 against Missouri Western in 2005.
The Lady Bucs will try to get back on the winning track Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Rhodes. Their next home match will be their GSC West opener Tuesday, Sept. 21, against Henderson State.
