Lady Bucs Sweep HSU to Open GSC West Play

Hailey Gillis had 11 kills in the Lady Bucs' three-set win over Henderson State Tuesday night at Canale Arena.
Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs swept Henderson State in three sets Tuesday night in the first Gulf South Conference West Division match of the year for both squads.

The Lady Bucs (6-9, 1-0 GSC West) appeared to have control of the first set with a 24-19 lead, but six straight Henderson State (8-4, 0-1) points gave the Lady Reddies a 25-24 lead and a chance to win, but the Lady Bucs would eventually outlast them to win 28-26 on a Michelle Hein (Tempe, Ariz./Corona del Sol HS) kill.  In the second set, the Lady Bucs jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead and never let HSU closer than four points again as they cruised to a 25-14 win.

In the final set, it was Henderson that started strong, building a 12-6 lead early and stretching it to 19-12.  The Lady Bucs, however, out-scored them 13-4 from there to win the set 25-23.

The Lady Bucs hit .222 as a team, paced by 11 kills each from Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) and Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS)Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) collected 24 digs, while Nolan added 16.  Hein had 12 digs to go with nine kills, and Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 33 assists to her match-best four aces.

Robin Law led the way for HSU with 16 kills and 21 digs, while Ashley Totten logged a match-high 32 digs.

The Lady Bucs hit the road Thursday night at Ouachita Baptist.  First serve is set for 6 p.m.  The Lady Bucs' next home match is set for Tuesday night against Arkansas-Pine Bluff.
