Lady Bucs' Season Ends in Five-Set Heartbreaker

Kelsey Miles had 47 assists in the Lady Bucs' five-set loss to Eckerd in the NCAA Division II South Regional Thursday afternoon.
Box Score TAMPA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs put second-seeded Eckerd on the ropes, but the No. 22 Tritons came back to win in five sets in the NCAA Division II South Regional Thursday afternoon at the University of Tampa's Martinez Center.

The seventh-seeded Lady Bucs (24-11) won a back-and-forth first set 25-22 after neither team led by more than four points in the set.  The second set saw 17 ties and nine lead changes, with no lead of more than two points.  After the last tie at 24-24, Eckerd (26-4) scored the last two points for the win as Alex Laton scored with a kill and a block.  The Lady Bucs dominated the third set, scoring eight of nine points in one stretch to break open a 16-8 lead en route to a 25-14 win.  The fourth set was back to the nip-and-tuck theme that dominated the day.  The Lady Bucs built a 10-6 lead early, but the Tritons tied it back at 13-13, then scored six straight points to take a 20-15 lead on their way to a 25-20 win.

In the decisive fifth set, the teams traded points to start, but Eckerd scored 10 of the next 12 after a 3-3 tie, pulling away to win 15-7 and end the Lady Bucs' first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 47 assists and eight digs, spreading the ball around as five different Lady Bucs collected at least nine kills.  Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) posted 12 kills and hit .348, both team-highs, while Kelly Nolan (St. Louis, Mo./Rosati-Kain HS) and Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 11 each.  Kaitlin Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) had 10 kills, while Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added eight digs, three aces, and four assists to her nine kills.  Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) collected a team-high 18 digs, and Nolan garnered nine.

Arianna Chinn paced Eckerd with 18 kills.  Lindsay Biggs had 14, followed by Olivia Fraser with 11 and Laton with 10.  Laton added a match-high eight blocks, while Biggs added 11 kills.  Hallie Ward collected a match-high 21 digs, while Bri Smith had 39 assists.

Eckerd advances to play third-seeded Rollins in the regional semifinals tomorrow night.
