Lions Edge Lady Bucs in Five

Hailey Gillis had 13 kills, nine digs, and four blocks, but the Lady Bucs lost in five sets at North Alabama Saturday afternoon.
Box Score FLORENCE, Ala.—Host North Alabama handed the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs a heartbreaking five-set loss Saturday afternoon as the Lady Bucs wrapped up the first half of the Gulf South Conference schedule.

The Lions (5-10, 3-3 GSC) took an early lead with a 25-18 win in the first set, but the Lady Bucs (11-5, 6-2) knotted the match with a 25-20 win in set two.  UNA answered with a 25-20 win of their own in the third set, but the Lady Bucs forced a fifth set by cruising to a 25-16 win in the fourth set.  In the decisive fifth set, the Lady Bucs built a 13-10 lead, but the Lions scored six of the last seven points to claim a 16-14 win and win the match.

Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) and Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) led the Lady Bucs with 13 kills each, while Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added 11 kills.  Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led the Lady Bucs with 15 digs, followed by 14 from Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) and 12 by Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS), and Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 48 assists.

Priscilla Massengale led the Lions with 20 kills, and Jessica Ronyak collected a match-best 24 digs to go with 15 kills.  Hope Rayburn logged a match-best 57 assists.

With the loss, the Lady Bucs fall a game behind first-place West Florida and are tied with Shorter for second place in the GSC.  The Lady Bucs return to action Friday night at 7 p.m., when they host West Alabama for Senior Night.
