Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs moved to the semifinals of the Gulf South Conference Tournament for the first time ever Friday night as they cruised to a three-set win over West Alabama.
The Lady Bucs (19-11) jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the first set and never trailed, winning 25-17, but West Alabama (12-19) built a 13-9 lead in the second set and led as late as 16-14 before the Lady Bucs scored 11 of the final 13 points to claim a 25-18 win in the set. The Lady Bucs finished strong. pulling away to a 25-16 win in the third set to claim the match.
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs' offense with nine kills, and
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) tacked on eight.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) logged a match-best 28 assists to go with 10 digs, while
Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and
Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) added 11 digs each.
Alecia Stewart (Rochester, Minn./Century HS) hit .667 with six kills in nine swings to go with three aces.
Cynthia Smith posted a match-best 12 digs for UWA, and Morgan Ray and Sadie Beam led the team with eight kills each. Chelsea Payne had a team-best 23 assists.
The win is the first GSC Tournament win for the Lady Bucs, who lost their first seven appearances in the tournament after joining the league in 1997.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 p.m., when they will take on the winner of tonight's match between West Georgia and Alabama-Huntsville. Top-seeded West Florida will face North Alabama in the other semifinal at noon. The championship match is set for Sunday afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
