Box Score PENSACOLA, Fla.—No. 17 West Florida claimed its fifth straight Gulf South Conference championship Sunday afternoon with a three-set victory over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs.
The Argos (26-7) never trailed in the opening set, but the Lady Bucs (20-12) stayed within four points until the end, when UWF pulled away from a 21-19 lead to win 25-20. Again in the second set, the Lady Bucs threatened, coming as close as 20-19 before UWF finished with five of the last six points to win 25-10. In the third set, UWF jumped out to an 18-4 lead and went on to win 25-10 to claim the championship.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, and
Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected a match-best 18 digs.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) dished out 26 assists.
Haley Shackelford led UWF with 12 kills, and KC Dobbins had 23 assists. Autumn Duyn notched a team-high 16 digs.
Three Lady Bucs, Headrick, Gillis, and
Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS), earned spots on the All-Tournament Team. Jenny Bellairs, Shackelford, and Duyn represented UWF, with Duyn claiming Most Outstanding Player honors. Priscilla Massengale of North Alabama completed the team.
The Lady Bucs await the announcement of their NCAA South Regional fate in the NCAA Division II Volleyball selection show tonight at 9 p.m. at ncaa.com. West Florida earned an automatic berth to the regional, as well as Sunshine State Conference champion Tampa and SIAC champion Clark Atlanta. The eight-team South Regional field, as well as the host school, will be announced tonight. The Lady Bucs were ranked No. 7 in the final regular season edition of the NCAA South Region Rankings.
