Lady Bucs Start 2-0 in CBU Invitational

Alison Welch collected 26 kills, 22 digs, and six aces to lead the Lady Bucs to a pair of wins Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs collected a pair of wins Friday in the season-opening Christian Brothers University Invitational at Canale Arena, taking down Tiffin in four sets before staving off Ouachita Baptist in five sets.

In the morning match against Tiffin, the Lady Bucs (2-0) claimed a 28-26 win in a first set that saw 15 ties and eight lead changes, but the Dragons (0-2) responded with a 26-24 win in the second set.  The Lady Bucs won another nip-and-tuck third set, 27-25, before claiming the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth set, pulling away in the end by scoring nine of the last 11 points after their lead had dwindled to 16-15.

Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 16 kills and 10 digs, and Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) tacked on 12 kills and 10 digs.  Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) notched 44 assists, and Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) garnered 30 digs in her college debut.

Danielle McQuade led Tiffin with 18 kills, and Tiffany Buchinger recorded a match-best 46 assists.

In the night match against Ouachita Baptist, the Lady Bucs cruised to a 25-12 win in the first set and held on for a 26-24 win in the second set.  Ouachita Baptist (0-2) would claim the next two sets 25-23 and 25-20, forcing a decisive fifth set.  Neither team could claim an edge early, with the score tied 7-7, but the Lady Bucs eight of the final 11 points to pull away for a 15-10 win.

Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 13 kills and seven total blocks to earn a match-best 17 points.  Gillis logged 12, while Welch and Kaitlin Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) added 10 each.  Headrick recorded 29 digs to lead five Lady Bucs in double figures.  Gillis collected 17, followed by Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) with 13, Welch with 12, and Miles with 11 to go with a match-best 48 assists.

Megan Askew had 11 kills to lead Ouachita Baptist, while Allison Frizzell collected a match-best 37 digs.

The Lady Bucs have a quick turnaround, as they will take on Lincoln Memorial at 8 a.m. to kick off the second day of the CBU Invitational.  The Lady Bucs are also scheduled to play in the 4 p.m. match against Arkansas Tech.
