Box Score 2 MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs earned two more South Region wins Saturday in the Christian Brothers University Invitational, claiming four-set wins over former Gulf South Conference foes Lincoln Memorial and Arkansas Tech.
The Lady Bucs (4-0) scuffled to a sluggish start in the morning match after last night's five-set marathon against Ouachita Baptist that ended just 10 hours before Saturday's match started. LMU (2-2) earned a 25-20 win in the first set as the Lady Bucs hit -.109 for the set. The Lady Bucs snapped out of it after the first set, however, hitting over .300 in the other three sets, winning 25-15, 25-9, and 25-19. The Lady Bucs hit a season-best .704 in the third set.
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the way with a match-best 16 kills and 21 digs, while
Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 12 kills.
Kaitlin Keathley (Henderson, Nev./Silverado HS) collected 11 kills.
Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) posted a match-high 23 digs, while
Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) and
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 13 each. Miles also collected 47 assists in the match. Blaire Fowler led LMU with 13 kills and 13 digs, and Allison Beavers had 18 assists.
In the nightcap, the Lady Bucs edged Arkansas Tech in a back-and-forth battle, winning the first set 25-23 before falling 25-21 in the second set. The Lady Bucs won the last two sets 25-22 and 25-23 to earn the victory.
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) pounded a match-best 19 kills and hit .486 for the match, and
Lizzie McLean (Munford, Tenn./Munford HS) tacked on 10 kills. Headrick again collected 23 digs to lead four Lady Bucs in double figures, followed by South (17), Welch (12), and Gillis (10). Kaci Jackson led ATU with 16 kills. Amber Cerillos added 42 assists, and Morgan McKellar collected a match-best 25 digs.
The Lady Bucs, now 3-0 in the South Region, travel to Bolivar, Mo., for the SBU Purple Bash, where they open against No. 7 Washburn Friday morning at 9:30. They will also face Harding, Pittsburg State, and Drury next weekend before returning home Friday night, Sept. 14, to open GSC play at home against West Alabama.
