Box Score MEMPHIS—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs defeated a nationally-ranked opponent for the first time since joining the NCAA Friday night when they upended No. 17 West Florida in five sets to take sole possession of first place in the Gulf South Conference.
The Argos (6-6, 3-1 GSC) took an early lead when they scored five of the last seven points to win the first set 25-21. In the second set, the Argos led 19-16 before the Lady Bucs (7-3, 2-0) exploded for nine of the last 12 points to claim a 25-22 win. In the third set, the Argos again had the Lady Bucs on the ropes with a 22-16 lead, but the Lady Bucs again responded, scoring 10 of the last 12 points to win the set 26-24. The Argos stormed to a 25-14 win in the fourth set, sending the match to a decisive fifth set. Again the Argos started strong, taking an 8-4 lead, but the Lady Bucs responded immediately. Four straight kills brought CBU within one point, and after a UWF timeout,
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) bookended an attack error with two aces, giving the Lady Bucs an 11-8 lead. The Lady Bucs never allowed UWF closer than two points again, winning 15-12.
Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) led the Lady Bucs with 35 digs, tied for third-most in a match in school history and the most since
Corinne Doder (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) had 37 at Southern Arkansas in 2009. The Lady Bucs' team total of 115 digs was the third-most in a match in school history and the most since 2002.
Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) added 26 digs, Doder tacked on 13, and
Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added 10 digs to her 11 kills.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) paced the offense with 16 kills, and her 57 total attacks were good for 16th in school history.
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) logged 13 kills.
Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected a match-best 55 assists, three off her career high. The Lady Bucs' 222 attacks were the eighth-most in a match in school history.
Haley Shackelford led the Argos with 14 kills, while Autumn Duyn added a team-high 29 digs to her 12 kills. KC Dobbins led the Argos with 24 assists.
The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m., when they take on Valdosta State.
