Lady Bucs Swept in First Day of Purple Bash

Hannah Kurtz had 21 kills over two matches, but the Lady Bucs lost both against No. 7 Washburn and Harding Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOLIVAR, Mo.—The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs dropped a pair of matches by 3-0 scores against No. 7 Washburn and Harding in the first day of the Southwest Baptist University Purple Bash Friday.

In the first match, the No. 7 Blues (5-0) used a run of five straight points midway through the first set to pull away from a 7-7 tie to a 12-7 lead, and they never allowed the Lady Bucs closer than four points again in a 25-16 win.  A similar run in the second set turned a 12-10 edge into a 19-11 lead on the way to a 25-19 win in the set, and they won the final set 25-17 for the victory.

Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) paced the Lady Bucs with 10 kills, while Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected 24 assists.  Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) notched a match-best 19 digs, and Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) joined her in double figures with 10.  Hillary Hughes led Washburn with a match-best 16 kills, and Abby Wittman logged 30 assists.

In the second match, Harding (4-3) opened a 20-11 lead before a furious rally brought the Lady Bucs within a 24-21 margin, but Harding claimed a 25-21 win.  A similar script followed in the second set, with the Lady Bisons running up a 19-12 lead, but the Lady Bucs came within two points at 24-22 before Harding scored the final point to win 25-22.  In the third set, Harding completed the match with a 25-18 win.

Kurtz recorded a match-high 11 kills, and Miles dished out a match-best 28 assists.  Headrick led the Lady Bucs with 14 digs, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 10.  Harding's Alyssa Short matched Kurtz's 11 kills, and Lisa Copeland led Harding with 16 digs.  Amber Schinzing added 26 assists and 12 digs.

The Lady Bucs take on Pittsburg State tomorrow at 11 a.m., followed by a 3:30 p.m. match with Drury.  The Lady Bucs' next home match is set for Friday night, Sept. 21, against West Florida at 6 p.m.
