Lady Bucs Rally for Split Saturday

Hailey Gillis collected 29 kills and 18 digs as the Lady Bucs lost to Pittsburg State and defeated Drury Saturday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOLIVAR, Mo.—After dropping a four-set match to Pittsburg State Saturday morning, the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs outlasted Drury in five sets Saturday afternoon in the Southwest Baptist University Purple Bash.

In the opener, Pittsburg State (7-0) won 25-23 in a first set that saw 16 ties and seven lead changes, with neither side leading by more than two points in the set.  PSU broke a 20-all tie to win 25-22 in the second set before the Lady Bucs (5-3) won the third set 25-19.  The Gorillas jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never allowed the Lady Bucs back into the fourth set, winning 25-15 to claim the match.

Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) let the Lady Bucs with a match-best 13 kills, and Hailey Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) added a dozen kills to her match-best 12 digs.  Kelsey Miles (Cordova, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected a match-high 36 assists  Brooke Fay led PSU with 12 kills, and Becca Pearson logged 25 assists.

In the afternoon match against Drury (5-5), the Panthers took a 25-22 win in the opening set, but the Lady Bucs stormed to a 25-15 win in the second set, but Drury answered with a 27-25 win in the third set despite the Lady Bucs' rally from a 17-12 hole to tie the set at 24.  In the fourth set, the Lady Bucs jumped to an 18-10 lead and held on to win 25-21, sending the match to a decisive fifth set.  The Lady Bucs took an 11-5 lead, then built their lead to 14-8, but Drury answered with five straight points before the Lady Bucs ended it with a 15-13 win.

Gillis and Kurtz tied for match-best honors with 17 kills, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) tacked on 15 more.  Kristina Headrick (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) collected a match-best 19 digs, followed by Lauren South (Bartlett, Tenn./Bartlett HS) with 17 and Miles with 13 along with her match-best 47 assists.  Drury's Alex Smith led the team with 13 digs as she matched Gillis and Kurtz with 17 kills.  Alexis Dutt picked up 44 assists.

The Lady Bucs hit the road Friday night at 7 p.m. when they visit West Alabama for their GSC opener.  Their next home match is Friday, Sept. 21, against West Florida at 6 p.m.
