Blazers Hold Off Lady Bucs in Five

Alexis Gillis led CBU with 20 kills and 16 digs, but Valdosta State claimed a five-set win Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs had more kills, digs, aces, blocks, and points than visiting Valdosta State Saturday afternoon, but VSU capitalized on CBU mistakes to claim a five-set win to remain in second place in the Gulf South Conference standings.

The Lady Bucs (7-10, 4-4 GSC) rolled to a 25-13 win in the first set, and they rallied from a 21-17 deficit to serve for set point ahead 24-23 in the second, but the Blazers (13-4, 6-2) scored the final three to win 26-24. VSU seized control with a 25-19 win in the third set, but the Lady Bucs scored eight of the final 10 points in the fourth set to rally for a 25-20 win to force a fifth set for the second straight day. VSU jumped to leads of 4-1 and 9-5 early, but the Lady Bucs rallied to pull within one point at 12-11. VSU scored the final three, however, to win the set 15-11 and win the match.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with 20 kills and 16 digs, while Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) and Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) racked up 12 kills each. Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) added 10 kills, while Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had 10 digs. Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) set a career high with 52 assists to go with 10 digs.

Jenna Kirkwood led VSU with 15 kills, while Krista Bradford notched a match-high 20 digs. Ashley Lala dished out 40 assists.

The Lady Bucs play five matches on the road next week. They visit Alabama-Huntsville Tuesday night at 7 p.m. before facing four Sunshine State Conference opponents in the UWF South Region Crossover in Pensacola, Fla., Friday and Saturday. They will face Barry and Tampa Friday and Florida Southern and Eckerd Saturday. Their next home match is set for Tuesday night, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. against Union.
