Box Score 2 PENSACOLA, Fla.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs split a pair of matches in the UWF South Region Crossover Friday, outlasting Barry in five sets but dropping a three-setter to No. 3 Tampa.
In the first match, the Lady Bucs (8-12) scored seven straight points to take a 7-1 lead early, and they took full command with six straight points to extend their lead to 20-8, eventually winning the set 25-13. Barry (5-9) answered with a 25-19 win in the second set, scoring 14 of the final 20 points after CBU led 13-11. In the third set it was the Lady Bucs' turn to play spoiler again, scoring seven straight points to take a 15-11 lead midway through and scoring seven of the final nine points to pull away to a 25-19 win in the set. In set four, Barry jumped to a 10-3 lead on their way to a 25-17 win to force a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth set, Barry took a 9-5 lead, but the Lady Bucs scored three straight to draw within one. After Barry regained a 12-9 lead, the Lady Bucs scored four straight to take a 13-12 edge. Barry scoredd the next two to serve for set point, but the Lady Bucs took advantage of three straight attack errors to win the set 16-14 and claim the match.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with 20 kills, hitting .375, while
Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) added 13 kills.
Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had a match-best 17 digs, followed by 12 from Gillis, and
Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) dished out a match-high 44 assists.
Jayla Trombley led Barry with 14 kills, and Jasmine Serna had 13 digs. Jenny Trinidad logged 33 assists.
In the Lady Bucs' second match, last year's South Region champions hit .472 rolled to a 25-13, 25-15, 25-14 win to improve to 15-1.
Gillis led the Lady Bucs with seven kills and a match-best 10 digs, followed by six kills by Korbakes. Reber had 20 assists.
Berkley Whaley hit .611 with 12 kills, and Marissa Lisenbee hit .643 with 10 kills. Kahley Patrick had 19 assists, and Jen Scholz had nine digs.
The Lady Bucs are back in action tomorrow in Pensacola. They face Florida Southern at 9:30 a.m., followed by a 2:00 p.m. match against Eckerd. Their next home match is Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Union.
