Lady Hawks Top Lady Bucs in Four

Brittany Toney gathered 21 digs, but the Lady Bucs dropped a four-set decision to Shorter Friday night in their home opener.
Box Score MEMPHIS-Visiting Shorter claimed a four-set win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs to spoil CBU's home opener Friday night at Canale Arena.

The Lady Hawks (6-5, 2-3 GSC) jumped out to an 18-9 lead in the opening set on their way to a 25-16 win, and they scored nine of 10 points to rally to take a 21-16 lead on their way to a 25-19 win in the second set. The Lady Bucs (4-9, 2-3) dug their way out of a 16-12 deficit to win 25-21 in the third set, but Shorter jumped to an early 14-7 lead and went on to win the fourth set 25-18 to seal the victory.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) paced the Lady Bucs' offense with 13 kills, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) and Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) had eight each. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) notched a four-set season high 21 digs for the Lady Bucs, followed by 17 from Gillis and 11 from Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS), who logged a match-high 38 assists.

Jasmine Crook led Shorter with 13 kills, and Erica Baker hit .500 with 11 kills and six blocks. Tanequa Whitman had 18 digs, followed by 16 and 17 assists for Dena Pierce. Cheyenne Frady dished out a team-high 21 assists.

The Lady Bucs are back in action Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. as they host Lee for the first time in 21 years. The Lady Bucs' last matchup with Lee was in the NAIA District 24 Tournament in 1993.
