Lady Bucs Top Lee in Four Sets

Alexis Gillis had 21 kills to lead the Lady Bucs to a four-set win over Lee Saturday afternoon.
Box Score MEMPHIS-The host Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs hit .304 as they evened their Gulf South Conference record with a four-set win over Lee Saturday afternoon at Canale Arena.

The Lady Bucs (5-9, 3-3 GSC) pulled away to a 25-13 win in the first set, but Lee (6-4, 3-3) answered by winning the second set 25-22. The Lady Bucs dug their way out of an early 8-4 deficit to come back for a 25-21 win in the third set, and they jumped to a 5-1 lead in the fourth set, but Lee answered with an 8-2 run to take a 9-7 lead. A 6-1 lead put the Lady Bucs back in front. After Lee tied the set at 19, the Lady Bucs scored six of the final seven points to win 25-20.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) pounded a career-high 21 kills, hitting .306. Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) hit .421 with nine kills. Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) notched a match-best 17 digs, followed by 13 by Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS), 12 by Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS), and 10 from Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS), who dished out 46 assists.

Paula Martins led the Lady Flames with 11 kills, while Latrice Johnson and Lauren Williams had 10 each. Sarah Davis led Lee with 12 digs, and Becky Bourne had 29 assists.

The Lady Bucs step out of GSC play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Lyon. They host West Georgia Friday night at 6 p.m. and Valdosta State Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
