No. 21 Argos Top Bucs in Four

Sami Gruse had 41 assists, 10 digs and four blocks, but No. 21 West Florida topped the Lady Bucs in four sets Friday night.
Box Score MEMPHIS-No. 21 West Florida used 17 kills and six blocks from Lindsay Homme as they claimed a four-set win over the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday night at Canale Arena.

The Argos (19-7, 11-2 GSC) dominated the opening set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead and rolling to a 25-10 win. UWF survived a nip-and-tuck second set that featured 12 ties and six lead changes before scoring the final four points to win 25-22 after CBU had taken a 22-21 lead. In the third set, it was the Lady Bucs (10-15, 6-6) who made the late comeback in a close set. UWF led as late as 23-22 before CBU rallied to claim a 27-25 win and force a fourth set. In the fourth set, however, UWF returned to its first-set form, jumping to a 12-6 lead as they went on to win 25-13.

Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) led the Lady Bucs with 41 assists, adding 10 digs and four blocks. Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) posted team-highs of 12 kills and 12 digs, while Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) added 11 kills. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) matched Gillis' team-high of 12 digs.

Homme's 17 kills and six blocks were match-highs, and she broke UWF's career record in total blocks in the third set. Sarah Scott added 14 kills, and Sierra Hansen dished out a team-high 23 assists. Tori Martella notched a match-best 13 digs.

The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. as they take on West Alabama. The Lady Bucs will honor seniors Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) and Megann Fickle (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) before the match.
