Lady Bucs Rally Past Valdosta in Five

Alexis Gillis had 22 kills and 17 digs as the Lady Bucs won in five sets at Valdosta State Saturday.
Box Score VALDOSTA, Ga.-The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs ended the regular season with a five-set win at Valdosta State Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Bucs (14-18, 9-9 GSC) started strong, jumping out to a 7-3 lead and never trailing in the first set as they went on to win 25-15. In the second set, VSU (19-13, 10-8) jumped to a 15-8 lead, but the Lady Bucs rallied to take a 19-17 edge. VSU rallied again, though, scoring five of the final seven to win 25-23. VSU won the third set 25-21, but the Lady Bucs won the fourth 25-17 to force a fifth set. In a back-and-forth fifth set, the Lady Bucs took a 12-10 lead but VSU scored three straight to take a 13-12 edge, but CBU capped it with three straight points to win 15-13 and win the match.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) had match-bests of 22 kills and 17 digs for the Lady Bucs, hitting .386. Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 14 kills, and Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) tacked on 13 kills. Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) had 12 kills, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 10. Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 14 digs, and Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) tacked on 13.

Jenna Kirkwood led the Blazers with 17 kills, and Destiny Berry had 12. Jessica Codato logged 32 assists, while Krista Bradford and Ashley Lala added 11 each.

With the win, the Lady Bucs clinched the No. 4 seed in the GSC Tournament next week in Pensacola, Fla. They will face No. 5 seed Alabama-Huntsville Friday at 2:30 p.m., with the winner set to face top-seeded West Florida Saturday at noon. The championship match is set for noon Sunday.
