Lady Hawks Sweep Lady Bucs

Alexis Gillis posted match-highs of 16 kills and 12 digs, but the Lady Bucs dropped a three-set decision at Shorter Friday night.
Box Score ROME, Ga.-Host Shorter swept a nip-and-tuck three-set match from the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs Friday night in Gulf South Conference volleyball action.

The Lady Hawks (17-9, 9-5 GSC) pulled away to a 20-14 lead in the first set, but the Lady Bucs (12-16, 7-7) rallied to tie the set at 21. Shorter scored the final three points after a 22-all tie to win 25-22, and they followed with a 25-21 win in the second set, scoring four of the last five after CBU pulled within 21-20. In the third set, the Lady Bucs squandered a 20-19 lead, with Shorter scoring six of the last eight points to win 25-22 and seal victory.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) pounded a match-best 16 kills, hitting .444 to lead the Lady Bucs' offense, and she added a match-best 12 digs as well. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) had 11 digs, and Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) added 10 digs, while Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had 29 assists.

Erica Baker led Shorter with seven kills. Elizabeth Dowd had 11 digs, and Dena Pierce logged a team-high 19 assists.

The Lady Bucs return to action tomorrow at noon as they visit Lee. Their final home match of the season is Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Alabama-Huntsville.
