Lady Flames Edge Lady Bucs in Five

Sami Gruse had 49 assists, 19 digs and eight kills in the Lady Bucs' five-set loss at Lee Saturday afternoon.
Box Score CLEVELAND, Tenn.-Host Lee outlasted the Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs in a five-set marathon Saturday afternoon.

In the first set, the Lady Bucs (11-17, 7-8 GSC) jumped to a 17-9 lead, but Lee (15-6, 11-4) scored 16 of the final 21 points to rally for a 25-22 win. In the second set it was the Lady Bucs who rallied, scoring six of the final seven points to win 25-21 after trailing 20-19 in a set that saw 10 ties and seven lead changes. Lee took control in the third set, eventually winning 27-25 in a set that saw 18 ties and no lead of more than three points. The Lady Bucs answered with a 25-22 win in the fourth set, and they jumped to a 9-4 lead in the decisive fifth set, but Lee scored 11 of the final 15 points to win 15-13.

Sami Gruse (Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic HS) had a match-best 49 assists to go with 19 digs and eight kills for the Lady Bucs. Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) had 16 kills and four blocks, while Stephanie Korbakes (Palos Heights, Ill./Alan B. Shepard HS) added 14 kills. Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) tacked on 13 kills and 14 digs. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) notched 22 digs, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 14 digs.

Latrice Johnson and Lauren Williams led Lee with 14 kills each, while Camil Martinez had 43 assists and a match-best 24 digs.

The Lady Bucs come home for the final time Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they host Alabama-Huntsville. The Lady Bucs finish the regular season next weekend as they visit West Georgia and Valdosta State.
