Lady Bucs Swept on First Day of UNA Classic

Brinsley Cooper had 16 kills and hit .412 in a five-set loss to Harding Friday morning. The Lady Bucs also lost in three sets to Missouri S&T Friday afternoon.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala.–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs dropped two matches Friday in the University of North Alabama Classic, losing in five sets to Harding and in three sets to Missouri S&T.

In the first match against Harding, the Lady Bisons (3-3) won the first set 25-21, but the Lady Bucs (2-4) outlasted them 29-27 in the second set and claimed a 25-18 win in the third set. The Lady Bisons jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the fourth set and held on, winning 25-20 to force a decisive fifth set. Harding took a 5-1 lead early in the fifth set, but the Lady Bucs rallied to tie it at 7. After a timeout, Harding scored eight of the final nine points to win 15-8.

Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) posted career-highs of 20 kills and 21 digs for CBU. Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .412 with 16 kills, and Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 11 kills. Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) notched 27 digs, and Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) added 11 digs to her 50 assists.

Mollie Arnold paced Harding with 25 kills, and Marindia Turner added 10. Taryn Eubank had 41 assists, and Lisa Copeland tacked on 22 digs.

In the second match, Missouri S&T (3-2) won the first set 25-18 and held on for a 25-23 win in the second set, holding on after the Lady Bucs fought back to tie the set at 23. In the third set, the Miners took a 16-7 lead on their way to a 25-14 win to complete the sweep.

Gillis led the Lady Bucs with 11 kills to go with 10 digs, and Cooper added nine. Reber gathered 26 assists. Welch posted a team-best 11 digs, and Toney added 10.

Krista Haslag led the Miners with 11 kills, and Allie Plunk had 25 assists.

The Lady Bucs continue action in the UNA Classic Saturday, taking on Rollins at 9 a.m. and wrapping up the weekend at 1 p.m. as they take on Missouri-St. Louis at Florence High School. They open GSC play on the road Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Union. Their home opener is Friday, Oct. 4, against Shorter.
