Box Score 2 FLORENCE, Ala.–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs lost a pair of matches Saturday in the University of North Alabama Classic, losing in three sets to Rollins and dropping a tough five-setter to Missouri-St. Louis.
In the first match, Rollins (7-0) pulled away to a 25-19 first-set win after neither team led by more than two points until the Tars took a 15-12 lead. In the second set, the Lady Bucs (2-6) whittled an 18-13 deficit back to take a 22-21 lead, but Rollins scored four of the final five points to win 25-23. They put it away in the final set, taking an 11-5 lead early on their way to a 25-16 win to seal the victory.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs with eight kills and nine digs, and
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .385 with seven kills.
Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 27 assists.
Camille Indest led Rollins with 10 kills. April Jackson logged 20 assists, and Ruth Harrington and Collyn Welsch gathered 12 digs each.
In the afternoon match, Missouri-St. Louis (4-4) took control early, winning the first two sets 25-19 and 25-15. The Lady Bucs pulled away to a 25-15 win in the third set, and they held on for a 25-21 win in a nip-and-tuck fourth set to send the match to a decisive fifth set. UMSL scored the first three points of the final set, but the Lady Bucs answered, tying the set back up at 6-6. UMSL scored the next five points to take an 11-6 lead, and the Lady Bucs' comeback effort ran out of time. They came within a point at 14-13, but UMSL's Chelsea Burkle ended the match with a kill.
Gillis led the Lady Bucs' offense with 19 kills, hitting .289.
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) had 14 kills, and Cooper pounded 11 kills with a .556 hitting percentage. Reber picked up a match-best 48 assists.
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) had 14 digs, and
Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) added 13.
Burkle led the Tritons with 19 kills, followed by 12 by Jory Siebenmorgen. Lindsay Meyer had 25 assists, and Shelby Bishop added 17 digs.
The Lady Bucs open GSC play Tuesday night at 7 p.m. as they visit Union. Their home opener is Friday night, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. against Shorter.
