Box Score JACKSON, Tenn.–The Christian Brothers University Lady Bucs opened Gulf South Conference play on a high note Tuesday night as they defeated host Union in four hard-fought sets.
In the first set, the Lady Bucs (3-6, 1-0 GSC) built a 15-10 lead, but Union (2-7, 0-1) rallied back to tie the set at 23 before the Lady Bucs scored the last two points to win it 25-23. In set two, the Lady Bucs jumped to a 12-5 lead on their way to a 25-18 win, but Union responded in the third set. The Bulldogs built a 17-12 lead and withstood a CBU rally to hold on for a 28-26 win in the set. After Union opened the fourth set with the first three points, the Lady Bucs scored nine of the next 12 to take a 9-6 lead. Union eventually rallied to knot the set at 19, but the Lady Bucs scored six of the last nine points to win 25-22.
Alexis Gillis (Corpus Christi, Texas/Carroll HS) led the Lady Bucs' offense with 20 kills.
Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) and
Hannah Kurtz (Memphis, Tenn./St. Benedict HS) added 11 kills each, and
Brinsley Cooper (Rossville, Ind./Rossville HS) hit .563 as she pounded 11 more kills.
Jessica Reber (Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had a match-high 40 assists and 12 digs, and
Brittany Toney (Rockledge, Fla./Rockledge HS) notched a match-best 14 digs.
Megann Fickle (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) served a career-high six aces, second-most in a four-set match in school history behind the record set by
Alison Welch (Olive Branch, Miss./Olive Branch HS) against Southern Arkansas Sept. 6.
Deja Moorer led Union with 14 kills, and Lydia Wright logged 34 assists. Elise Seufert added a team-high 12 digs.
The Lady Bucs have a week off before they visit North Alabama next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. Their first home match is set for Friday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. against Shorter.
